“Nigeria Must Not Sleepwalk Into Democratic Crisis” Dr. Moshood Abioye Issues Stark National Warning

Nigeria may be standing at one of the most defining crossroads in its democratic history, and the choices made now could shape the nation for generations to come.
This was the strong message delivered by Amb. Dr. Moshood Ismail Abioye in a fiery national statement that has already begun generating political conversation across civic and policy circles.

Dr. Abioye warned that any action perceived to weaken electoral transparency, particularly ongoing debates surrounding result transmission mechanisms risks igniting a deep crisis of confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
“Democracy is not sustained by speeches or slogans,” he declared. “It survives on credibility. The moment transparency becomes negotiable, democracy begins to bleed.”

He stressed that electoral integrity is not a partisan demand but a national safeguard, this should be a call to the leadership of the national assembly and fellow nigerians they are respresenting and not a political leader or godfather “ballot is sacred. Once citizens begin to suspect that the system protecting their votes is uncertain, the foundation of governance begins to crack. And when that foundation cracks, instability finds oxygen.”

Dr. Abioye clarified that he is not an official member of any political party in 2023 but accepted the appointment of patron of Tinubu support group for Akinyele LG, noting that his involvement during the 2023 general elections was driven by conviction rather than blind loyalty.
“My support was anchored in belief, belief in leadership strength, renewal, and institutional progress. We mobilized resources, because we believed Nigeria was entering a new chapter of measurable reform and accountability.”

However, he acknowledged that many Nigerians are now expressing concern about the direction of national discourse and institutional confidence.
“Hope must never become a slogan without substance. Renewal must be visible. Transparency must never be diluted. Nigerians are watching and patience is not infinite.”
He warned that economic hardship, youth frustration, and rising public anxiety have created a fragile national climate. Any perceived democratic regression, he said, could deepen distrust at a dangerous pace.
“A nation does not collapse overnight,” Dr. Abioye cautioned. “It weakens gradually when warning signs are dismissed, when transparency is debated instead of defended, when citizens begin to feel unheard.”

He further emphasized that strong leadership does not fear accountability.
“True strength embraces scrutiny. True renewal strengthens institutions. A democracy that begins to shrink civic space or create uncertainty around its electoral architecture is a democracy walking on thin ice.”
In what observers describe as his most emotionally charged intervention yet, Dr. Abioye issued a historic warning:
“Nigeria is too important to gamble with. Too strategic to experiment with. Too fragile to ignore the power of accumulated frustration. When trust erodes, stability trembles. And when stability trembles, the consequences are never mild.”

He called on well-meaning Nigerians across party lines, civil society, traditional institutions, religious bodies, youth movements, and the diaspora to rise above silence and demand stronger democratic safeguards.
“This is not a season for silence. It is not a season for fear. It is not a season for blind loyalty. It is a season for courage.”
Dr. Abioye concluded with a powerful national appeal:
“Future generations will ask what we did at this defining moment. Let it not be said that we saw the warning signs and chose comfort over country. Nigeria must strengthen its democracy not weaken it. Nigeria must choose transparency. Nigeria must choose accountability. Nigeria must choose stability. And it must choose wisely now.”
