As the rainy season intensifies across Oyo State, the recent alert and advice issued by the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYOSEMA) regarding flood-prone areas, especially in rregions of our dear local government Akinyele Local Government deserve serious public attention and immediate community action.
Flood disasters are not just natural occurrences; they are worsened by human carelessness particularly the reckless disposal of waste into gutters, drainage channels, and water paths. These blocked channels often result in devastating floods that threaten lives, destroy property, and disrupt livelihoods.
I join voices with OYOSEMA in urging all residents of Akinyele and its environs to desist from dumping refuse in waterways. Cleaning and unblocking channels are essential to prevent flash floods and other environmental hazards.
It is important to commend the proactive and visionary leadership of His Excellency, Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde, whose administration has continued to prioritize the safety and welfare of citizens. Under his leadership, OYOSEMA and other relevant agencies have remained vigilant, active, and responsive.
I also acknowledge the commendable role of my mentor and leader Hon. Wole Akinleye in Akinyele Local Government. His proactive engagement with the people, support for environmental efforts, and commitment to public sensitization have further strengthened the fight against avoidable flooding in our communities.
Let us all remember, flooding is preventable. Let us embrace a culture of environmental responsibility. Let us teach our children, inform our neighbors, and commit ourselves to keeping our gutters, canals, and water routes free of waste.
The safety of our homes and the future of Akinyele depend on the actions we take today.
Say no to waste in drainage. Say yes to a safer Akinyele.
