The National Association of Special Education Students, University of Ibadan/Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo Chapter, in partnership with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has recognized Otunba Moshood Ismail Abioye, the Otunba of Iroko, and Chief Atunluse Oloye Fasakin with Awards of Excellence in acknowledgment of their remarkable contributions to the growth and development of Iroko, Oyo, and its environs.

The awards ceremony, which attracted dignitaries, students, and community leaders, served as both a celebration of leadership and a platform to emphasize the importance of inclusive education, particularly for children and young people with special needs in Nigeria.

Speaking after receiving his award, Otunba Moshood Ismail Abioye stressed the urgent need for government and society to prioritize special needs education and provide equal opportunities for all learners. In his words:

> “Education is the foundation of individual empowerment and national development. Yet, for too long, children and young people with special needs in Nigeria have been marginalized, facing systemic barriers that prevent them from accessing quality learning opportunities. The global movement for inclusive education calls for a paradigm shift: one where every child, regardless of ability, disability, or circumstance, is given equal opportunity to learn, thrive, and contribute meaningfully to society.

This is a call to our government to leverage on technology and make available at all learning institutes facilities for the special students, and enough funding to encourage learning students in these special departments. This is a stand-up call to every one of us to stand by the truth and defend special students, individuals at any place and at all times.”

Organizers described both honorees as “visionary leaders whose dedication to service has left a lasting impact on education, inclusivity, and community growth.” They emphasized that the awards were not only a recognition of their efforts but also a challenge to others in positions of influence to invest in social development and inclusive learning.

The National Association of Special Education Students reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights of special needs learners in Nigeria. They called on the government, private sector, and civil society to collaborate in providing better infrastructure, training, and resources that will enable learners with disabilities to thrive in the educational system.

The event concluded with goodwill messages from community stakeholders who commended the honorees and expressed optimism that the recognition would inspire more individuals and organizations to support inclusive education and community development.

Available at the event is Rt Hon Asimiyu Alarape, former speaker oyo state house of Assembly and many others .
