Today, on June 12, Nigerians pause to honor the sacrifices of heroes who fought for democracy. Yet, it is deeply worrisome that the dividends of democracy; security, poverty reduction, equitable development, and social justice, seem increasingly elusive. Insecurity, widespread poverty, infrastructural decay, and governance flaws threaten the ideals for which our forebears struggled.
As echoed by concerned forums and civic groups, the political situation in Nigeria has far exceeded the bounds of what many of us imagined when we first embraced democratic governance. Some fold their hands in despair, but complacency cannot be the answer. Every citizen must take the bull by the horn voting wisely, engaging critically, and demanding accountability from leaders at all levels.
The 2027 political horizon is near, and it is germane that Nigerians change their attitudes and actions. We must stop settling for leadership driven by survival or self-interest and instead choose leaders committed to good governance, integrity, and national development. True leaders prioritize human welfare, strengthen institutions, tackle corruption, and create opportunities for all citizens.
The dividends of democracy are not merely political freedom, they are security for every citizen, access to quality education, economic opportunities, healthcare, and transparent governance. These are not luxuries; they are rights that democracy must guarantee.
As we reflect on June 12, let us honor past heroes by working collectively to restore hope, progress, and justice. Let this day ignite our commitment to participate actively in shaping the Nigeria we want. The power to reclaim democracy’s promise lies in our hands, and the time to act is now.
